An analysis of Misty-rious New Room - The Official Generation Five Site (2024)

So I’ve seen others analyse the magic room that the spell book led Misty to in Misty-ious New Room and wanted to give my own thoughts on the topic, so here we go.

First off, why did the spell book choose Misty when it could have chosen either Sunny or Izzy. This is something I’ve seen other fans upset or angry about; the magic room that the book came from is in Sunny’s house and Sunny is supposed to be the main character, yet the book chose Misty. As explained in my previous thread from a few days ago I believe that the writers are having Sunny and Misty share the spotlight as the main protagonists, but as several people pointed out, they might just be cycling through giving all the characters time in the spotlight. Plus as I also said in my previous thread while fans have pegged Sunny as the new Twilight, contrary to popular belief Sunny has never really that big an interest in magic, nor has Izzy for that matter. Now sure, Misty hasn’t shown a particular interest in magic either, but as the girl who grew up not knowing who she was or where she came from Misty is the one of the three who is most driven by curiosity. And the argument that the room is in Sunny’s house doesn’t make much sense considering a) Izzy, Zipp, Pipp and Misty also live there, and b) the old lighthouse may have belonged to Sunny after her dad died, but that building was knocked down by Sprout in the movie’s climax and the new Crystal Brighthouse that was built in its place seems to belong to the Mane Six as a group (Hitch maybe less so than the others) rather than Sunny as an individual.

Moving on, there’s the question of who built the room. The architecture in general doesn’t seem to match anyplace we’ve seen before, but the stain glass windows that depict important events is a very particular design choice that we have seen once before; the Canterlot Castle throne room. This might imply Celestia and/or Luna, but my honest first guess when I saw the episode for the first time was Twilight, since one of the symbols on the floor that opened the door reminded me of her Cutie Mark. But then on a rewatch, Misty’s line when she was trying to open the door caught my attention. Here’s the line:

Swirl, star and magic.

“Swirl, star.” Put those the other way around and you get “Star, swirl.” Or in other words, Starswirl the bearded. So Misty’s line could be interpreted as “Starswirl and magic,” which if we rephrase slightly we get “Scarswirl’s magic.” Admittedly, this is all a huge leap on my part, but the stain glass windows I mentioned before actually point to Starswirl as well. Three of the windows depict events from the FIM series; Celestia and Luna defeating Discord (witnessed by Twilight via the Alicorn potion in Princess Twilight Sparkle), the Mane Six defeating Nightmare Moon in Friendship Is Magic and Cadence and Shinin’ Armour repealing the Changeling invasion in A Canterlot Wedding. There are all well known events from the G4 era that don’t help us narrow down who built the room, but another two windows depict events from the G1 era, more specifically the events of Escape from Midnight Castle and the G1 movie. If these aren’t merely Easter eggs, then this is significant evidence as G1 isn’t in continuity with G4 and G5, but Starswirl is known to have experimented with dimensional magic, having studied the mirror that leads to the EQG world and sent the Sirens/Dazzlings there, so he could have looked into other worlds as well.

Next, we have a small moment that piped my interest. After Misty opens the door a page rips itself out of the spell book and folds itself into a butterfly, before merging with Misty’s Cutie Mark and briefly surrounding her body with a rainbow aura. Was this the book giving Misty an enhancement to her magic. We’ll have to wait and see if the aura appears again.

Finally, there’s the question of Argyle’s connection to all this. After Misty leaves exits the room we cut to Sunny looking at the photo of her and her father from ANG. The episode briefly focuses on the photo, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this is the first time we’re seeing the photo in ages. You see, there’s one window I haven’t talked about yet, one that depicts the Mane Five. Now why would a group that only came together recently timeline wise already have a window dedicated to them in a room none of them knew existed. This is another hint to Starswirl being the one who built the room. As he also experimented with time magic, he could have looked into the future, saw what happened to Equestria, the group that would bring everyone back together and built the room where he knew they’d eventually find it. And if that is the case, then Argyle might have found the room long before Misty ever did, which would explain how he seemed to know what fate had in store for his daughter in his recording that Sunny found in Starscout Code.

There’s one more thing about this episode that I want to talk about, but that will be part of a separate thread. For now, what do you all think of this episode?
