the -- this entire block. neighbors tell us they were inside the cable went out and there were neighbors out on the streets yelling fire! fire! this is at santa barbara avenue and santa barbara court. heavy smoke, they saw flames and trees, spreading to the house at the end of a cul du sac. the fire hoses are snaking up and down the street with firefighters furiously hoping to save homes. witnesses at nearby businesses saw flames and smoke in the backyard. >> we're about -- we're backia cross the street about 300 yards and there were flames jumping up about 30 feet in the air. there was huge plumes of black smoke and about every 30 seconds there would be, like, an explosion, like big black clouds with flames popping up. my main concern was that there were very high winds and lots of

trees around the area. i was afraid those would catch on fire. we also have a vacant field across from the shop which i was afraid the flames would jump over there. >> as you can tell there is really gusty winds out there and i have heard from numerous people on the scene that it caused a lot of problems in making the fire spread so quickly from a park into the neighborhood. police told me that the fire started on a trail and they believe, they're blaming right now at least, a homeless emcampment for starting a fire that whipped by the end moved into this neighborhood and took over this backyard severely danieling they're investigating the cause right now and still working here. many, many fire crews on the scene trying to gradually get things back to normal and get the neighbors back into their homes. i'm leslie brinkley. abc 7 news.

lightning strikes are occurring in the area northeast of sacramento where you mentioned the thunderstorms are occurring and of course, the snow in the sierra. let's talk about our winds looking at sfo where there are arrival delay takes out to 90 minutes. peak wind gusts. recorded in the last 24 hours. 52 miles an hour at mountain tam and half moon bay livermore and oakland. right now we have 37 miles an hour gusts over fair field and the area of the fires we reported on on the top of the newscast. gusts over 30 miles an hour in other locations as well. now, take a look at the 24 hour temperature change. you can see it is much cooler in all locations around the bay area than it was at this hour yesterday. here is the forecast animation from the showers coming our way at 7:00 tonight, we'll see showers developing lalter tonight and during the overnight hours. 7:00 tomorrow morning we'll see widespread pockets of light showers across the bay area. that pattern will continue into the afternoon hours with showers

growing memorial wanting to learn more about the woman shot and killed. she was driving a stolen car. candidatems and flowers mark the spot where police shot and killed a woman yesterday. two uniformed officers were conducting a stolen vehicle recovery operation in the bayview district when the driver of a stolen vehicle fled. she hit a parked car. while officers were trying to take the woman into custody she moved the vehicle she was driving in a back and forth motion. one officer fired one shot. the woman died at the hospital. >> it was heartbreaking. >> reporter: a candlelight vigil was held last night. >> i felt the need to come back and pay respects. i'm a mother. >> reporter: not much is known about the victim, lee wonders if she has children. >> i'm thinking of her family and the trauma. >> reporter: graffiti nearby says say her name.

yesterday was say her name day a day to up lift stories we have never heard. >> what is important is who they were to people and their families. >> reporter: the officers involved are on administrative leave as an investigation into the fatal shooting continues. in san francisco. melanie woodrow. nbc 7 news. all children have safely left three san francisco schools locked down earlier tonight, today i should say. someone called in a bomb threat to george washington high school this morning. police set-up a perimeter around the school. they searched for explosives. nothing was found. nearby lafayette elementary schools were put on lockdown alzheimer's a precaution. police talked to the suspect on the phone but have not made an arrest. >> we're doing everything possible at this point. it appears everything is safe. we want to go the extra mile to make sure we find out who this person is. to hopefully not have this happen again. >> a specialized police unit will take over the investigation.

happening now in san jose a civil rights legend is being honored for leading a nationwide campaign to stop bullying. ruby bridges survived bullying a half sebtcentury ago. abc 7 news reporter david buoy is live. >> while some prefer to lead silent, she wants to lead by example. >> reporter: this book through my eyes is being used by schools across the country to suppress bullying. it is the story of ruby bridges, the first black child to integrate an all white school in new orleans. she was taunted and verbally assaulted despite the presence of federal marshals. the year was 1960. >> kids actually are drawn to my story because of that same sense of not belonging and a person not really giving you a chance.

airport traffic is increasing here in the bay area and around the country causing long lines at tsa security check points but there is a way around those lines at least for those who can afford it. laura anthony has the details. >> reporter: the long lines at tsa check points across the country pushed many travellers to the web, to sign up for tsa precheck. even if it means forking over extra money. >> visit chicago lately? >> no, we have not. >> we heard a story about it today. >> i haven't had the opportunity to sleep in the airport approximately in a long way and i don't want that. >> according to the tsa, the number of applications for tsa prechecked doubled from 8,000 to 16000 per day. >> it takes about two weeks for applicants to get their traveller number but it could

president obama signed a bill into law today allowing the ashes of female world war ii pilot as to be placed at arlington national cemetery. it was spurred on by a petition launched by a walnut creek woman who was a wasp. they were considered civilians during the war. school placement has been an on going issue in san francisco that doesn't have neighborhood schools. >> students may live miles away from her school. one student reached out because of her unusual school. >> for years, san francisco parents have waited anxiously to find out where their kids will go to school. many public school students in the city are not assigned to the neighborhood school and end up at another location. >> of course, we want all of the brothers to be together. they're very close. >> reporter: brittany

osullivan's case is more complimented. one of her students attends diane feinstein university five blocks away but her twins, richard and john were assigned to a school three miles from home even siblings are usually given priority. >> you put them in another school that starts at the same time. >> since 1990, they adopted an admission formula to allow kids in different neighborhoods to attend some of the top performing schools in the city. that gives a bigger academic outcome for some of the under served students. the superintendent says parents shouldn't give up. >> i would encourage any parent who doesn't like the assignment or would like to try to change an assignment to contact our enrollment officer. eps and to come in and speak with a counselor and to layout what the circ*mstances are. >> but osullivan has already gone down to the district to

tomorrow. hundreds of riders competed in a time time. it made its way through santa barbara monterey and lake tahoe tahoe. the tour ends in sacramento on sunday. we're hearing from the hiker who helped rescue the hiker who was stranded in the tahoe national forest with his dog for three nights. the national guard rescued 23-year-old cody michael and bower thursday morning. michael's quick thinking kept them alive. he wrote help in duct tape so rescuers could spot him. michael got lost when snow covered the trail and he started getting worried when his dog slowed down. >> at first i was getting mad at him. we're going to die. you don't understand the circ*mstances. don't try to do it on your own. settle down, all of the awesome people, they'll be out there to get you. >> great outcome here. both michael and bower are doing well. his family plans to have a nice, family dinner as soon as
