Updated on June 5, 2024, by Mohamed El Ouardighi: There's an undeniable allure to sci-fi that captivates people. Perhaps it's the yearning to delve into future worlds and ponder the possibilities they hold. That's precisely why we've updated this list to introduce a few more gems, adding a sprinkle of sci-fi games.

24 The Outer Worlds

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (8)
Platform(s)
Switch , Xbox One , PS4 , PC

Released
October 25, 2019
Developer(s)
Obsidian Entertainment

Coming from the minds behind Fallout New Vegas, The Outer Worlds is a very entertaining action RPG. It is set in a future where humans have colonized a new star system. However, not everybody made it to their new home. And it just so happens that you were a part of that unlucky group.

But at the beginning of the game, a strange scientist wakes you up and gives you the task of acquiring the resources necessary to awaken the rest. That's just the basic setup for what turns out to be a compelling tale filled with witty dialogue. The quality of the story is matched by the quality of the gameplay, as it's a whole lot of fun whether you're playing stealthy or trying to kill everyone in sight.

23 Nier: Automata

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (9)
Platform(s)
PS4 , Xbox One , PC , Switch

Released
March 7, 2017
Developer(s)
Platinum Games

While Nier: Automata is technically an RPG, it could just as easily be considered a hack-and-slash. The mixing of the two genres works extremely well and makes the combat very satisfying. It never gets dull, either, as the title throws plenty of unique set pieces your way to vary up the format.

Nier: Automata isn't all about combat, though, as it also provides a deep narrative. The tale mostly revolves around a war between androids and machines. Yet, it gets a lot more complex as you get deeper into it. In fact, it can perhaps get too complicated at times, but it remains engrossing nonetheless.

22 Horizon Zero Dawn

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (10)
Platform(s)
PlayStation 4 , PC

Released
February 28, 2017

In Horizon Zero Dawn, you play a woman named Aloy, who lives in a beautiful world overrun by machines. The story revolves around the protagonist as she attempts to learn more about herself and the world she inhabits. It serves as a compelling mystery throughout.

Best Turn-Based RPGs For The PS4

Turn-based role-playing games are some of the biggest in the genre, and the PlayStation 4 now has more than ever. Here are the best you can play.

Equally interesting is the combat. You continually have to face and bring down machines of all different types. There is plenty of strategy involved as the creatures all have their own distinct weaknesses you have to exploit and use against them. The same tactics won't work for every foe, so you must be adaptable.

21 Stellar Blade

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (12)

Stellar Blade draws inspiration from Nier and soulslike games, offering an experience where you play as Eve. She utilizes futuristic technology through her combat suit, excelling in combat as she fights the Naytiba to save humanity, or what's left of it. With the help of Adam and Eve during her journey, you can expect to fight your way through all the time, and combat is what Stellar Blade excels at.

While the game may not be the longest, it still offers a fresh experience. If you're craving a soulslike Nier gameplay with decent characters and a pilot twist at the end, with a sci-fi touch, then Stellar Blade might be just the thing you're looking for.

20 Borderlands 3

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (13)
Platform(s)
PC , Stadia , Xbox One , Xbox Series X , Xbox Series S , PS4 , PS5

Released
September 13, 2019
Developer(s)
Gearbox Software

Borderlands games are adored for their eccentric characters, humorous and imaginative dialogue, and, of course, the crucial element: gunplay. With Borderlands 3, the experience has only improved. While the story might not be its strongest aspect, you're in for an enjoyable and special ride.

Choosing from the four distinct classes in the game, each offering special and unique gameplay, you embark on an exploration of various planets and encounter a cast of crazy and sometimes bizarre characters. Your mission? Put a halt to the plans of the twins Troy and Tyreen Calypso, preventing them from harnessing the power of the Vaults scattered across the galaxy. The universe of Borderlands 3 feels like a Space Western, blending science fiction with fantasy in a captivating way.

19 Shadowrun Returns

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (14)

Shadowrun can represent an excellent go-to for fans when they're not in the mood for or pen-and-paper RPGs. Fortunately for the entire gaming community, this tactical role-playing game delivers the goods in Shadowrun Returns.

Admittedly, this title is one of the shorter games to make this list. Depending on how much you're into reading the dialogue, you can finish it in around 12 hours. But finding out what happens next in the cyberpunk Seattle of the future is well worth the price of admission.

18 Starfield

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (15)
Platform(s)
PC , Xbox Series X , Xbox Series S

Released
September 6, 2023
Developer(s)
Bethesda

An incredibly ambitious RPG, Starfield takes the Bethesda mold across 120 different star systems across the galaxy. You'll find the trademark Bethesda quality quests here, but the customization and player choice are off the charts. There are so many different playstyles and stuff to toy around with.

You can make some truly awesome ships in the shipbuilder if you just take the time to play with it. The story is also mindblowing, especially towards the end. Never before in a Bethesda game will you be just dumbfounded by the events unfolding. It's a total blast of a game as long you engage with the parts you enjoy. There's so much in this game that not every bit of it will be to your liking.

17 Fallout: New Vegas

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (16)
Platform(s)
PS3 , Xbox 360 , PC

Released
October 19, 2010
Developer(s)
Obsidian Entertainment

Have you grown tired of games that promise to have a meaningfully different story based on your choices? Do you laugh when a developer claims that you could play the entire game with dialogue choices? Fallout: New Vegas will make you believe that both are possible.

This game accomplishes having on-point gameplay while delivering well-written stories with deep and meaningful lore (which is one of the reasons why its storyline is considered among the best in RPG history). Bethesda proved with Fallout 3 that the series could work as a first-person shooter. But Fallout: New Vegas allowed you to revel in that success. For this reason, and many others, you will struggle to find fans that don't consider it the best of the FPS games.

16 The Technomancer

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (17)

While The Technomancer may not be the top-tier Sci-Fi RPG out there, it still deserves a spot on this list. Set in a post-apocalyptic Mars, you assume the role of a technomancer, a wielder of powerful electrical powers, navigating through a society teeming with political intrigue and societal turmoil.

The game flawlessly blends action-packed combat with deep RPG elements, enabling you to tailor your character's abilities, weapons, and gear to your liking. The complex faction system adds layers of depth, requiring you to navigate alliances and betrayals, ultimately shaping the destiny of the Red Planet.

15 EVE Online

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (18)

Imagine the biggest science-fiction sandbox you can, triple that number, and you might get close to the scale of EVE Online. 24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (20)
Platform(s)
SNES , PS1 , Game Boy Advance , PC , Mobile

Released
April 2, 1994

Developer(s)
Square

The final mainline 2D entry into the Final Fantasy series was a certified banger SNES RPG. Originally released in the West as Final Fantasy 3, the series definitely saved the best 2D entry for last with a sweet steampunk setting and one of the most iconic villains in all of RPGs.

Kefka is one nasty bad guy you're incredibly eager to take down, especially with his iconic evil laugh. It isn't the best SNES RPG nor the best Final Fantasy game, but still in the top echelon of RPGs in the 16-bit era.

13 Fallout 2

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (21)
Platform(s)
PC

Released
October 29, 1998

Developer(s)
Black Isle Studios

Fallout: New Vegas is the best FPS entry in the series, but Fallout 2 is the best isometric RPG in the series. While its graphics haven't aged as well as others, one could argue that it represents the series' best.

Fallout 2 dedicates itself to a hardcore isometric RPG experience, and it's a master class in the genre. As if that's not enough, many fans find that nothing Bethesda has brought to the table can match the story or branching paths in this game. The Interplay era of the Fallout universe is something no gamer should go without experiencing, but you may want to embark on this endeavor with mods that make the game even better.

12 Deus Ex: Human Revolution

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (22)
Platform(s)
PS3 , Xbox 360 , Wii U , PC

August 23, 2011

Developer(s)
Eidos Montreal

Deux Ex: Human Revolution is a brilliant blend of genres. The voice acting and script can have their rough edges, but its deep commitment to building a near-future science fiction world holds it together. Blade Runner fans, cyberpunk fiction junkies, and even art history majors can find something to love.

If Deus Ex: Human Revolution does one thing well, it's offering the player an abundance of choices. If you dive into this experience, you will rejoice at the amount of freedom you have throughout. The game may look like a straightforward shooter on its surface, but it's a deep sci-fi RPG experience to its core.

The game follows Cal Kestis, a Jedi Padawan who survived the Purge, and is being hunted by the Imperial Inquisitors who seek to destroy all remnants of the Jedi Order.

Along the way, you'll meet new and unique characters and droids, battle classic Star Wars enemies like Stormtroopers and AT-STs, and upgrade your Jedi abilities. Star Wars has always been a staple of the sci-fi genre, and Fallen Order exemplifies the franchise's greatest aspects, fitting in perfectly with the series as a whole.

9 System Shock 2

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (26)
Platform(s)
PC

Released
August 11, 1999

Developer(s)
Irrational Games , Looking Glass Technologies

System Shock 2 is the RPG survival horror game that proved Ken Levine was one of the most innovative designers in the world. Without the success of this game, we may not have had the pleasure of experiencing the original Bioshock. You can say what you want about its sequel or Bioshock Infinite, but you can't claim that System Shock 2 isn't a linchpin in the history of video games.

For starters, the story and atmosphere feel like an epic three-way marriage between The Thing, Alien, and Blade Runner. It's an absolute shame that it was almost impossible to play for so many years. You should do yourself a favor and dive into this deep sci-fi horror RPG that continues to stand alone over 20 years after its original release.

Great Sci-Fi Games That Never Got A Sequel

From abandoned franchises to casualties of capitalism, these sci-fi greats haven't seen a sequel... yet.

Chrono Trigger is unique because it has one of the best soundtracks, characters, and battle systems ever created. With multiple endings and an engaging aesthetic, you won't want to put it aside once you get neck-deep into its world. Close to 30 years after its release, you could do much worse buying any other sci-fi RPG (or even the best time travel games) out there.

7 EarthBound

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (29)
Platform(s)
SNES , Game Boy Advance

Released
June 5, 1995

Developer(s)
HAL Laboratory , Ape Inc.

EarthBound, or Mother 2 in Japan, continues to be one of the most unique and beloved RPGs in history. Even its advertising had its quirks, even if it was painfully 90's in presentation. Before its North American debut on June 1, 1995, its ad in Nintendo Power included a scratch and sniff section that proclaimed, "It stinks!"

Far from being terrible, EarthBound regularly finds itself on lists for the best games of all time. If you enjoy the old-school turned-based RPG style of the SNES, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. If you do and love it, though, just don't hope for a North American release of Mother 3 anytime soon.

6 Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (30)
Platform(s)
Xbox (Original) , iOS , Android , Switch , PC , macOS

Released

Developer(s)
BioWare

Regardless of the bickering over the latest Star Wars media, one game still has the power to unify fans. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic found its way to store shelves on July 15, 2003, and it still deserves respect as one of the best sci-fi RPGs ever made.

To this day, its gameplay remains solid, and it's an excellent mechanic to draw you even farther into its stellar storytelling. Without a doubt, the story rivals the very best of what Star Wars has ever offered its fanbase and has some truly special characters that fans will never forget.

5 Deus Ex

24 Best Sci-Fi RPGs, Ranked (31)

One of the most legendary games of all time has to be the original Deus Ex. While not a pretty game by today's standards, once you look beyond the graphics, you'll find yourself playing one of the most immersive and engaging sci-fi RPGs of all time.

Not only does Deus Ex still hold up, but it was incredibly influential to the immersive sim genre, and its impact can be seen in titles like Prey (2017) and Deathloop. With the amount of player choice here, you can play this game countless times and still try something new. It's frankly a masterpiece that forever changed the gaming landscape going forward.
